Prometheus was the Titan of forethought

• He was welcomed into Mount Olympus for helping the Gods

• He betrayed the Titans during the war between the Gods and Titans

Zeus said there should be creatures upon the earth

• Wanted lesser beings in the garden of the Gods

• Gave the job of creating creatures to Epimetheus

  • Zeus gave him a sack containing everything needed to construct a creature

  • He made all the creatures of the world

  • He gave each animal special characteristics to survive

Epimetheus wanted to make one special creature

• He reached into the bag to make humans but nothing was left

• Therefore, humans were created as ugly beasts that couldn’t survive

• He turned to Prometheus to help him make humanity great

  • Prometheus knew that humans needed technology to help them survive

  • The first technology humans received was fire, given to them by Prometheus

    • More technologies were to follow

Zeus declared that only the Gods should have fire because it was powerful and could be used against them

• Prometheus stole fire from Mount Olympus, gave it the first humans, and taught them how to use it

  • Humans started to act more like people than animals

Zeus knew Prometheus took the fire and chained him to the Caucus Mountains as punishment

• Every day a great eagle would come and rip open his torso and eat his liver

• He is still chained to the mountain

• It is a constant cycle because he is immortal

• His mercy led to the survival of humans and technology

• Greeks saw Prometheus as a hero for helping humans and was given an unjust punishment
